Le 21 mars dernier, dans l’enceinte du Rideau-Hall, le Père Pierre Labine, recevait des mains de Son Excellence Mary Simon, la Gouverneure générale du Canada, la Médaille pour service méritoire (division civile).

Cette décoration reconnaît les Canadiennes et les Canadiens qui ont accompli des actions exceptionnelles durant une période prescrite et qui font honneur au Canada. Elles comportent deux divisions : civile et militaire.

Lors de cet événement à Rideau Hall, le Père Labine a été honoré :

1. pour sa lutte contre la pauvreté depuis plus de 25 ans en offrant des services d’optométrie humanitaire dans plus d’une dizaine de pays en voie de développement. Depuis il a participé à quelque 75 missions humanitaires qui ont permis de distribuer plus de 600 000 paires de lunettes à des populations dans le besoin.

2. pour avoir, en 2003, fondé la section québécoise de VOSH International (la Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity) qui, en partenariat avec des universités, offre chaque année à des centaines d’étudiants en optométrie la chance de participer aux missions et d’acquérir des compétences qui en feront des professionnels ouverts sur la monde.

Note : Œuvre Vosh Santa Cruz est maintenant un chapitre canadien important de Vosh International.

Dans son message aux récipiendaires présents, la Gouverneure générale Simon leur a dit « se réjouir de pouvoir parler de vos histoires, les histoires de personnes extraordinaires qui contribuent constamment à faire du Canada un pays où il fait bon vivre ».

Rappelons qu’au cours de son implication pendant toutes ces années à Œuvre Vosh Santa Cruz, Pierre Labine s’est vu remettre de nombreuses récompenses comme :

• en 2012, Vosh International lui attribuait le titre « d’Humanitaire de l’année »;
• En 2019, il a reçu la médaille Pro Ecclésia et Pontifice du Pape François lors d’une cérémonie spéciale tenue à l’Oratoire St-Joseph de Montréal qu’il porte fièrement sur son veston lors de l’événement à Rideau Hall;
• Aussi, au cours des nombreuses missions Vosh Santa Cruz dans les divers pays visités, plusieurs autres reconnaissances lui ont été attribuées sur place pour services rendus en matière de services oculaires et de distributions gratuites de lunettes tant auprès des adultes que des enfants.

Ses fidèles bénévoles qui le suivent dans son action à Montréal et lors de ses missions humanitaires à l’étranger se réjouissent de cet honneur que lui reconnaît le Gouvernement du Canada.

Mentionnons que l’Oeuvre Vosh Santa Cruz, fondée en 1999, par le Père Pierre Labine, célébrera cette année son 25^e anniversaire de fondation.

On March 21, in the Rideau Hall, Father Pierre Labine received the Medal for Meritorious Service (civil division) from the hands of Her Excellency Mary Simon, the Governor General of Canada.
This decoration recognizes Canadians who have accomplished exceptional actions during a prescribed period and who bring honor to Canada. They have two divisions: civil and military.

During this event at Rideau Hall, Father Labine was honored:

1. for its fight against poverty for more than 25 years by offering humanitarian optometry services in more than ten developing countries. Since then, he has participated in some 75 humanitarian missions which have distributed more than 600,000 pairs of glasses to populations in need.

2. for having, in 2003, founded the Quebec section of VOSH International (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity) which, in partnership with universities, offers each year hundreds of optometry students the chance to participate in missions and acquire skills that will make them professionals open to the world.

Note: Œuvre Vosh Santa Cruz is now a major Canadian chapter of Vosh International.

In her message to the recipients present, Governor General Simon told them “to be delighted to be able to talk about your stories, the stories of extraordinary people who constantly contribute to making Canada a good country to live in.”

Let us remember that during his involvement over all these years at Œuvre Vosh Santa Cruz, Pierre Labine was awarded numerous awards such as:

• in 2012, Vosh International awarded him the title of “Humanitarian of the Year”;
• In 2019, he received the Pro Ecclesia and Pontifice medal from Pope Francis during a special ceremony held at St. Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal, which he proudly wears on his jacket during the event at Rideau Hall;
• Also, during the numerous Vosh Santa Cruz missions in the various countries visited, several other recognitions were awarded to it on site for services rendered in terms of eye services and free distribution of glasses to both adults and children.

His loyal volunteers who follow him in his actions in Montreal and during his humanitarian missions abroad are delighted with this honor recognized by the Government of Canada.

Note that Œuvre Vosh Santa Cruz, founded in 1999 by Father Pierre Labine, will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year.
